Palletising System Overview
Our robotic palletising system simplifies packaging and loading. This setup is designed to improve efficiency and reduce labour costs while ensuring safety. Our robots accurately handle various products, stacking and managing loads effectively. Discover more below.
How It Works
The system features a single robot that can stack boxes from one infeed onto two separate pallet spots. At any time, only one pallet spot is used, but the next pallet can be prepared so the robot can easily switch sides when one is finished. The system uses SCM’s palletising software, which lets you input box sizes and automatically calculate stacking patterns.
Key Features of the Cell

System Overview
The compact palletising robot KUKA KR30 for production lines features a single robot that can stack boxes from one feeding area into two separate pallet spots. Only one spot is utilized at a time, but the next pallet can be prepared for the robot to switch sides automatically after completing the first. The system uses SCM’s palletising software, which allows you to input box sizes and automatically calculates the optimal arrangement on the pallet.
Infeed Conveyor
The system is located at the end of the production line for boxed products. Adjust the conveyor height to match the feeding conveyor. The infeed conveyor detects a box, and then the first conveyor starts if it isn’t already full. Both conveyor sections can hold boxes until the robot is ready to pack them.
A box pusher at the end of the conveyor aligns each incoming box, getting it ready for the robot to stack. The pusher also checks the width of the first box in a new batch to ensure the product details match what the operator entered.
KUKA KR30 palletiser with custom gripper for packaging
Our KUKA KR30 Palletising Solutions use a vacuum gripper to stack boxes on pallets. The gripper adjusts for different box sizes to ensure safe transport. A pump motor at the base creates the vacuum. The robot has an ultrasonic sensor on the gripper to align with the floor and infeed conveyor, making setup and adjustments easier when moving the system. The sensor also measures a new empty pallet for accurate delivery heights and checks the height of the first box in a new product batch.
Safety Zones & Items
E-Stops
E-stops are for emergencies only and will stop the cell immediately. Do not use them for regular stops. If the cell will be off for a long time, do a normal stop before using the e-stop. You must disengage all E-stops to start again. After releasing the e-stop, reset it with the blinking HMI reset button. Using an E-stop will cancel system modes, so you’ll need to choose Auto or Manual mode again after the reset. If there’s been no movement, the system will go back to the last position.
Light Barriers
You can only cross the front barriers if you have a confirmed entry request indicated by a solid white light. When crossing the barriers while they are active, the robot will stop until you request authorized entry. The robot will slow down to allow you to pass through if the staff permits entry. If you cross the inner light barrier, it will stop the robot. You can reset it by pressing the flashing HMI button.
Control & Operator Panels
The box conveyors use ConveyLinx DC rollers. There are two conveyor sections for accumulation.
C1 – Box Load Position
Place boxes here, or have them fed automatically by an upstream conveyor when no box is present, auto mode is on, and it is stationary. The box will move to the end of C1 and wait until C2 is ready.
C2 – Accumulation Position
Boxes go on the conveyor when it’s empty, the robot is clear, and the pusher is back. The pusher will place the box upon arrival and then retrieve it.
SCM' Palletising Software - Alarm Screens
The HMI displays different alarm screens sorted into categories
- Active alarms – Alarms that are currently active
- Warnings – Shows the history of process alarms. Some are general, and more details can be found on the Alarms Info page
- Info – Provides detailed information about specific process alarms
- Diagnostics – Shows detailed system information related to the control system and modules
- System – Displays internal system alarms
- Errors – Shows internal system errors
- Logs – For monitoring frequent alarms. This resets after 5,000 alarms. HMI operations detect operational errors.
